While many of us keep looking back and forth, wondering which company – Samsung or Apple – holds the largest market share in the Smartphone market, the Apple flagship iPhone 5 has carved something of a niche for itself in the heart of its fawning fans.

For two months in a row, Counterpoint Technology Market reports show, the iPhone 5s has topped the charts as the world’s top-selling smart phones.

Apple doesn’t stop there though – it holds three of the top-ten smart phones for October 2013, with Samsung managing to fit itself in the number 4 position. Nokia manages to squeeze in at positions eight and ten.

To forestall the argument that the figures are only for shipments, Counterpoint says that the figures are based on sales, and not just on shipments: "iPhone 5s sales saw an upward sales momentum as Apple continued expansive roll-out for its flagship model thus further widening the gap with its arch rival's flagship model Samsung's Galaxy S4.”

Meanwhile, while Samsung is leading in China and Lenovo holds the number two spot, we see something interesting here: Apple’s shares have quadrupled – from 3% to 12% in October.

Should Samsung be afraid?
