The Nigerian Army in Borno State yesterday refuted media reports that 30 people including a groom who were returning to Maiduguri from a wedding ceremony in Adamawa State were killed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, saying only five people died in the attack.

But some families of the victims say the military authorities grossly underestimated the casualty figure and called on relevant stakeholders to take the right step of containing the insurgency rather than trading blames.

Lt.-Col. Mohammed Dole, spokesman of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army said in a statement in Maiduguri yesterday that the media report on casualties was false.

According to him, there was actually an attack on a bus at Bulakuri village in Bama LGA resulting in the killing of five persons and not 30.

“The corpses of the victims are in Bama and not Maiduguri as stated in the report,’’ Dole said.
