The Artisan Fishermen Association of Nigeria, has claimed that ‘bonga’ fish and sardine, for which the Niger Delta is known, have disappeared from the waters due to the bonga oil spill.
Mr Inyang Ekong, the Coordinating Secretary of the association, made this claim in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, adding that the oil spill had negatively affected fishing activities in general in five states.
The states are Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Ondo and Rivers.
Ekong said that members of the association had not recovered from the effect of the spill which occurred in 2011.
