Arsenal started their 2013/2014 English Premier League season with a defeat, losing at home to visiting Aston Villa.
Two goals in a each from Christain Benteke and another from Antonio Luna sent the Gunners crashing at the Emirates.
In less than six minutes into the game,Olivier Giroud carried on his impressive form, from the pre-season and latched on to an Oxlaide Chamberlain’s low cross from the left,to shoot Arsenal in the lead.
But Aston Villa were not detered as they pressed on for an equaliser.
Benteke saw his penalty saved, but he followed up the rebound and converted the goal with his head.
Then Villa controversially got another penalty, after Laurent Koscielny slid in on Gabriel Agbonlahor. Benteke made no mistakes, dispatching the kick and giving Villa a 2-1 lead.
But the final nail for Arsenal, was in the 85th minute when Weimann played through a pass to Luna who fired past Szczesny at the near post for 3-1.
The game would shatter the Gunners who came into the game with a depleted squad and knowing that they have to strengthen before the end of the transfer window if they are to compete this season.
In the first game of the day,Liverpool started on a brighter note, defeating Stoke City 1-0 at Anfield.
Daniel Sturridge got the goal for Brendan Rodgers’ side, who on the same day confirmed that wantaway striker,Luis Suarez has reneged about his decision to leave Liverpool.
It was an entertaining game,as both goalkeepers were kept busy, with Simon Mignolet saving a penalty to help his new team to all three points.
How big a blow is this loss to Arsenal, can they bounce back and win the league?
