Ahead of the World Athletics Championship,Nigerian contingent will on Monday depart for Moscow,Russia,where the event is taking place.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria(AFN) selected 20 athletes to represent the country at the championship,and the pool of athletes were selected from the Cross River/All Nigeria Championships which was held in June.
“We are only going to Russia to do our best. Our athletes have prepared on their own and I am sure we can get one or two medals,”an AFN official told Vanguard Sports.
It is understood that the AFN planned to camp the athletes,before the championship,but couldn’t again,as they had difficulties meeting the set demands.
Only two athletes will be participating in the field events,while the other 18 will do the track events.
All eyes will be centred on Blessing Okagbare who has been in spectacular form this year,at all the Diamond meets,she took part it in.
Okagbare will be doing the Long Jump and the track events,while the other field event will done by Tosin Oke,in the Men’s Triple Jump.
The athletes are all expect to converge this weekend,and baring any hitch,will all depart for Russia on August 5th.20
