Sports AWC: Super Falcons off to a winning start after a 4-2 victory over Ivory Coast

Nigeria's Super Falcons defeated Ivory Coast 4-2 to start off the African Women Championship(AWC) on a winning note.

In a day that their men counterpart, the Super Eagles lost to Sudan, the Super Falcons avoided any slip-up in their quest to reclaim the AWC title from Equatorial Guinea.

Esther Sunday opened the scores for the Super Falcons after just 12 minutes to underline Nigeria's dominance in the match.

However Ivory Coast found a way back into the match, winning a penalty in the 21st minute which Fatou Coulibaly Tiegnou did well to convert and level the scores at 1-1.

Nigeria pressed for another goal, but the Ivorians were brave and repelled every onslaught as they went into the break level with the Nigerians.

However they caved in to the pressure and Mariam Diakite turned in a ball into her own net to score an own goal.

Desire Oparanazie finally got on the score-sheet after many attempts, netting the third goal for the Super Falcons.

Cote d'Ivoire did set up a nervy last 15 minutes, pulling a goal back through Christine Lohoues Yeble to put the scores at 3-2.

But the win was complete when Oparanozie got her second goal of the match, the fourth goal for Nigeria in the 87th minute.

The Super Falcons share top spot with Namibia who also have three points, but Nigeria top with a superior goals difference.
