Hurricane Irma hammered a string of northeast Caribbean islands, thrashing them with rain and winds of up to 180 mph, and leaving at least nine people dead.

The hurricane battered several islands, including Barbuda, St. Martin and the British Virgin Islands.

The eye of one of the strongest storms recorded in the Atlantic is making its way toward a possibly devastating hit on Florida over the weekend.

The National Hurricane Center described Irma as "extremely dangerous."

Barbuda is one of the 2 major islands that make up the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. It's known for its secluded pink- and white-sand beaches like reef-lined Spanish Point, and North Beach, backed by palm trees.

The Category 5 storm leveled Barbuda, damaging 95 percent of its buildings and leaving the island “barely habitable", according to reports

The French interior minister, Gerard Collomb, said at least eight people had been killed in French Caribbean territory, and at least three deaths were reported elsewhere. The authorities warned that the toll would rise as communications improved.

President Trump has also declared a state of emergency in Florida, Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands. The storm is expected to reach Florida on Sunday, potentially causing catastrophic flooding.
