Home state of Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan which encompasses much of the oil-rich Niger Delta, Bayelsa, has begun groundwork on a new international cargo airport in the African country, AviationMedia says.

Once completed, the airport will provide connections between the rapidly-growing state and the rest of Nigeria, and neighbouring regions.

State commissioner for works and infrastructure, Barrister Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, made the disclosure yesterday while leading a delegation of the National Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) on an inspection tour of the site, which is under construction.

The state government says sand-filling work has been completed at the site of the state-owned international cargo airport project at Amassoma.

The commissioner explained that, civil and other construction related works will commence as soon the sand, which is still sedimenting, as a result of the peculiar terrain of the area, settles down.

He added that, construction of vertical drains that facilitate the sedimentation process will also start soon.
