The Benue House of Assembly on Thursday directed the Ministries of Education, Sports and Women Affairs, to suspend the recruitment into the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).

The decision was sequel to the motion on A Matter of Urgent Public Importance by Mr Benjamin Nungwa (CAN-Kwande West), and 14 others.

Nungwa urged the house to investigate the implementation of SURE-P at the state and local government levels. He alleged that the SURE-P funds were not judiciously applied by the agencies concerned.

The Speaker, Mr Terhile Ayua, directed the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) issuing forms to applicants to put the exercise on hold pending the resolution of the house on the matter.

Ayua announced the formation of a five man Ad hoc Committee to investigate the implementation of SURE-P in the state and report to the house within two weeks. He charged the committee to ascertain how much had accrued to the state since the inception of the programme from 2012 to date.

The speaker also urged the committee to find out the projects that had been carried out by the implementing agencies and how much was spent on each project.

He said that they should ascertain the number of Benue indigenes that were enrolled for the programme and how much was paid to each of them.(NAN)
