Borno State Government has begun the massive fumigation and clearing of areas within the state capital Maiduguri, formerly under the control of the Boko Haram sect.

The sanitation of the areas follows the call by the state government to all the fleeing residents of the town, who had been held hostage by the outlawed sect, to return back to their homes.

Meantime, the former enclaves of the sect, which were deserted at the peak of the crisis, have started showing signs of life as some of the residents who fled the areas have returned.

During a visit to some of the deserted areas at the weekend, the state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Zanna Mustapha, many people were seen on the streets cheering the august visitors on.

The areas visited include Budum, Kofa Biyu, Shehuri, Abbaganaram, Gwangbe and Old Jere, who were few months ago totally deserted, desolate and inaccessible to any law abiding citizen.

Speaking to newsmen, the Deputy Governor said: "As you can see life has returned to Maiduguri and those that fled these areas have returned……….I cannot but appeal to those that fled at the peak of the crisis to return to their homes, as their security is now guaranteed since the insurgents have either been captured or are fleeing."

Measures Taken

Alhaji Mustapha praised the effort of the youth vigilante group and the Joint Task Force, who have collaborated to check the excesses of the Boko Haram sect.

He assured the returnees that the state government will quicken the evacuation and clearing of the drainages and cut the outgrown weeds so that the areas can be once again habitable. The Deputy Governor promised that the vandalized electrical transformers in the affected areas would be immediately replaced, as the government continues to work with both the JTF and the youth vigilante group to ensure that the gained ground in terms of security is not lost.
