The Supreme Court today ruled that Parliament’s approval is needed before the government can trigger article 50 and formally initiate the UK’s departure from the European Union.
The justices ruled against the government by a majority of eight to three; GUARDIAN UK reports.
The judgement means Theresa May cannot begin talks with the EU until MPs and peers give their backing - although this is expected to happen in time for the government's 31 March deadline.
