Here’s what we know so far:
Related: Multiple Explosions Reported at Brussels Airport
- At least 26 people are dead in blasts at the city’s airport and a metro station, news reports say. The toll is likely to change.
- At least two locations were hit: There were two explosions at Brussels’s Zaventem airport at about 8 a.m. local time (3 a.m. ET) and at least one more at Maelbeek metro station, which is close to the main European Union buildings.
- Estimates of the death toll at the airport range from 11 to 14; the fatalities at the metro station range from 15 to 20. The numbers are provisional and are likely to change.
- Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, in a televised news conference, said “dozens” are dead and wounded in the blasts. He said the blast at the airport was caused by a suicide bomber. The Belgian federal prosecutor added that both attacks were terrorist acts.
- Public transportation has been shut and people have been asked to stay in place.
- Belgium has raised its terror alert system from three to four, its highest level.
