Metro Bus Conductor Allegedly Attacks, Rapes Passenger

A bus conductor, Saheed Bilawo, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates' Court, Lagos, for alleged robbery and rape.

The Prosecutor, ASP Felix Ifijen, said Bulawo had on Nov. 30, 2013 at about 8:00 p.m. accosted a 19-year-old woman at Oshodi bus stop while waiting for a bus.

“Bilawo grabbed her from behind while threatening to kill her and forcefully collected her purse containing N100,000 cash and a cell phone valued at N10,000,” he said.

“The accused also forcefully had canal knowledge of the complainant,” the prosecutor said, adding that the matter was immediately reported to the police and he was later arrested.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 258, 285 and 409 of the Criminal Code of Lagos State, 2011 which provide that anyone who commits rape is liable to between 15 years and life imprisonment.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Jan. 29 for trial.
