Cargo clearance in Nigerian ports could be achieved in less than 24 hours, barring discrepancies, Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Abdulahi Dikko, on Thursday said in Port
Harcourt at a seminar on maritime and energy organised by the state’s chapter of Maritime and Energy Media Practitioners of Nigeria (MEMPON).

He said that the less-than-24-hours cargo clearance was made possible by the introduction of Pre-shipment and Assessment Report (PAR), one of the latest reforms in the customs service.

He explained that with PAR, there was no longer need for importers to travel to the exporting countries to transact their business.

“You can transact your import business from ‘your toilet’ with your laptop and get all the trade information you need by logging on to the trade hub,’’ he said.

Dikko said that the transformation at the ports had been slow, but that customs had been receiving the blames for it, adding, however, that the service was not the only agency operating the ports.

Also, Managing Director of Nigeria Ports Authority, Mr Habib Abdulahi, disclosed that some port channels in the zone were currently being dredged to accommodate large vessels.
