The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) says it is collaborating with security agencies to check the importation and sale of uncensored films in the Nigerian market.

Mr Yunusa Tanko, the Deputy Director and Head, Corporate Affairs, of the board, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday.

Tanko said the collaboration became necessary in view of the need to ensure that the content of films imported to the country were beneficial to Nigerians.

Our greatest challenge is to make sure that the content that is in the Nigerian market is content that has gone through due process.

Content that Nigerians can watch as a family, content that are educative both culturally and otherwise.

Our concern is to make sure that the 'unwholesome movies' are not available in our market.

That has posed a very big challenge to us especially pornographic materials. So what the board is doing is to make sure that those types of materials are not available in the Nigerian market.

Tanko who decried the existence of uncensored and unclassified films in the Nigerian market, attributed the illegality to the activities of some dishonest operators in the industry.

According to him, the board is clamping down on the perpetrators.

He said, "we have engaged security agencies to clamp down and get them arrested. The board is also collaborating with other sister agencies, such as the National Film Corporation and the Nigerian Copyright Commission."

The deputy director explained that several arrests had been made and video clubs closed down for non-compliance with the board`s guidelines on the establishment of video clubs.

He pledged the board’s commitment to ensure that Nigerians’ got only films that had been certified and declared decent enough for viewing.

According to Tanko, the board is working toward reducing the number of pornographic films in the market because of their negative effects on the society.

He also stressed the need for the public to look out for censored films, before making purchases.
