Sports Chelsea denies gambling with Thibaut Courtois' head injury against Arsenal

Chelsea have defended fielding Thibaut Courtois longer than he should have in their Premier League game against Arsenal on Sunday.

The Blues have come under criticisms for gambling with the Belgian and the manner they handled his head injury, not promptly substituting him when it happened.

Courtois collided with Alexis Sanchez, but played on for another 14 minutes before being taken to hospital for checks after suffering from concussion.

But the club in a statement on Monday said that Courtois suffered:"a minor cut to the ear".

"Thibaut Courtois went to hospital during our game against Arsenal yesterday for precautionary tests on a head injury. Those tests came back all clear. He is expected to report for international duty later this week," they said in a statement.

Courtois was substituted after it became apparent that he couldn't continue, with some reports claiming that he was by then bleeding from his ears.

Petr Cech who has had similar experience with concussion, replaced the 23-year old in the game and helped Chelsea secure a 2-0 win over Arsenal.
