The Chief Imam of Nupe Central Mosque, Kaduna, Malam Muhammad Nafi'u, on Friday in an interview with newsmen commended President Goodluck Jonathan for signing the same sex marriage into law.

The clergy described sodomy as one of a great sins in the eye of God, with disastrous consequences on nation's condoning it.

The clergy said Islam is totally against lesbianism and homosexuality, describing the acts as ``devilish''.

He called on Nigerians to shun countries and organisations criticising the President for signing the bill into law.

Nafi’u said it was important that those caught engaging in gay marriages should face capital punishment and advised government to ensure that the law is strictly adhered to. He said anyone caught should be prosecuted, so as to serve as deterrent to others.

He called on parents to always ensure that they discharge their responsibilities of ensuring proper moral upbringing of their children and also urged Muslims to pray for the country and to live in peace and harmony with their neighbours.
