The trial of the alleged attempted rape by two Chinese men of a 20-year-old Nigerian girl, Oluchi Chukwuemeka, was stalled on Thursday as the court said it was waiting for response from the Directorate of Public Prosecution, Federal Ministry of Justice.

Our correspondent, however, learnt that the victim had been under pressure to withdraw the case from court to avoid a diplomatic row between Nigeria and China.

Chen Gang and Zhao Weidong, the alleged suspects of Chinese nationality, are both under the employ of the China Civil Engineering Construction Company.

Gang was said to be Chukwuemeka’s boss in a department of the company and screamed for help as Gang struggled to disrobe her in one of the company store rooms. While Weidong has been accused as an accessory for his part in allegedly throwing the victim's phone in the toilet when he thought she had recorded the attack on her phone.

Both suspects have been arraigned on seven counts of sexual harassment indecent assault, perversion of justice and wilful damage before they were admitted to bail.

Human rights groups have gotten involved in the matter as the victim was pressured into withdrawing from the case for the sake of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China.
