Not many would have paid attention to the furious re-emergence of the disease hitherto thought to have been forgotten, at least in major cities of the country, years back until the federal government last week declared that cholera has continued to ravage the nation and so far claimed 74 lives.

According to a press statement issued by the Minister for Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, as at October 31, seven states of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Plateau, Zamfara, Sokoto and Nasarawa have so far recorded a total of 1,623 cases and 86 deaths.

The current estimate of the patterns of distribution of the cholera outbreaks across the country showed as follows: Zamfara: 1,110 cases, 51 deaths, Nasarawa: 105 cases and nine deaths.

Other states are as follows: Lagos: 134 cases, four deaths; Plateau: 130 cases, 11 deaths; Oyo: 29 cases, six deaths and Ogun: 115 cases and five deaths; cumulative casualties: 1,623 cases and 86 deaths.

Chuckwu had said in the statement, “These are estimates, because trickles of incidences and mortalities may still be coming. However, in Sokoto and Katsina states, the gastro-enteritis outbreaks have not been proven to be cholera. While further investigations continue, only confirmed cases are included in the current statistics.
