Christmas Eve would probably have been a display of nasty fireworks in Ebonyi were it not for the timely intervention of the anti-bomb squad. The people of Abakaliki were tossed into a fit of panic when a black, ‘jelly-like’ substance was found in a jerry can. The substance is suspected to have been an explosive material.

No one knows who planted the explosives, only that it was planted in front of an old-generation bank on Water Works road, Abakaliki.

The Nigerian Police force’s anti-bomb squad and other security agents responded in commendable time to quell stampedes and restore serenity in the vicinity.

An anonymous eyewitness reports that the anti-bomb squad arrived at about 7:30am on Tuesday and defused the bomb to the accompaniment of thick black smoke.

It is worthy of note, however, to emphasize that the state police command has said that the substance detonated by the bomb disposal unit wasn’t a bomb.

ASP Chris Anyawu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), who described the substance, said it wasn’t an improvised explosive device and he also dismissed the ongoing speculation that there is insecurity in the Ezillo axis of Abakaliki. He advised motorists to travel the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway without fear.
