Britain had been a bolt hole for numerous corrupt Nigerians, including former governor James Ibori, jailed for 12 years in 2012 at Southwark Crown Court for money-laundering. In an article filed by DailymailUK, Nigerian billionaires and corrupt politicians allegedly owned most of the expensive mansions in the UK.
‘‘There is corruption behind several houses on one street – The Bishops Avenue in Hampstead – known as ‘billionaires’ row’. They include a house bought by Nigeria’s late Abubakar Audu, a former provincial governor who went on the run after he was charged by the country’s Economic Crimes Commission.
Nigeria, it has now emerged, is to introduce a new register of property holdings and the companies to which they belong – transparency that, so far at least, goes further than the UK.’’ DailymailUK writes.
