Over the weekend, the people of Ekiti took to the streets en-masse and voted in Ayo Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as their next governor. Many view Fayose’s election as a plus for Nigerian democracy because he defeated an incumbent governor, Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Others including Nigeria’s ruling party see it as a sign that the people of Ekiti have rejected the APC since Fayose contested and won using PDP machinery.

Today, five Nigerian Governors; Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers, Alhaji Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano and Alhaji Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara state, will stand before a court unsure of their political future. The PDP is asking the court to sack them from office since they defected from the platform on which they were elected.

In defence, the five governors are telling the court that “yes” they stood election on the platform of the PDP but they have freedom of association.

Many have argued that often times elections are not about political parties but the candidates they present. Nigerian politicians have become known for their restless and almost nomadic nature. They use a party’s manifesto and machinery to get into office, soon after they wake up one morning and declare that the party is evil…..they decamp.

It is pertinent to note; the Nigerian electoral act has no provisions for Independent candidature, candidates must be presented by a political party.

Decamping from one political party to the other while occupying an elected office has become a subject of many discourse. Some say it is morally wrong while others see no evil in it. Today, you get the chance to play judge; we want to hear your opinion on the defection saga.

Should elected public officers decamp from their original political party to another?
