Donald Trump has formally nominated retired general John Kelly as secretary of the department for homeland security.

"The responsibility for immigration, counter-terrorism efforts and the president-elect’s proposed US-Mexico “wall” will lie with Mr Kelly, a former Marine general who led US military operations in Latin America", according to a statement from Trump’s transition team on Monday.

The 66-year-old is the third retired general to be picked to join the Trump administration after James Mattis, his choice for defence secretary, and Mike Flynn, his national security adviser.

Mr Trump said in a statement that Mr Kelly would “spearhead the urgent mission of stopping illegal immigration and securing our borders”, streamline the Transportation Security Administration and improve co-ordination between intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
