All is set for the Edo state governorship elections. The long anticipated election day has arrived. The main player’s in today’s election are the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Today’s election will be determined by a number a number factors which lead to success or defeat of either the PDP or the APC. Both sides stand a chance of winning today’s election but there can be only one Victor.

The position of the PDP is a unique one as the party seeks to reclaim its lost mandate in the state. Here are 5 factors that may help PDP win Edo state:

1. Nigeria’s economic recession

Nigerian is governed by an APC President, Muhammadu Buhari who has somehow managed to plunge the country into recession. Nigerians all over are hungry and now looking to their Governors for positive change – this spell dooms for the APC as President Buhari was quoted saying ‘’A vote for Obaseki is a vote for me’’. The hungry citizens do not need a representation of President Buhari in Edo state.

2. Sidelining of Edo Central

The APC made a tactical error when it ignored Edo Central and picked Godwin Obaseki’s running mate from Edo North instead. Edo Central currently has no representation in the top tier of government in the state, indigenes naturally are angry at the APC. Edo Central consists of 6 local governments known to be PDP strongholds. Ignoring Edo Central may cost APC the election.

3. Oshiomhole’s shoddy governance

Adams Oshiomhole may have done his best, but Edo indigenes are not impressed. So much more was expected from a former labour leader who once led multiple protests against the government. Most of Oshiomhole’s campaign promises to the people of Edo state remain unfulfilled while a few others were shabbily concluded just before campaigns started.

His tax policies also do not endear him to the people. The Governor has had a rocky relationship with organized labour and pensioners all through his tenure. Edo people certainly do not want him leaving his candidate in office.

4. Division in the APC

All is not well within the APC in Edo state. The primary election which produced Obaseki was seriously contested by 11 other candidates most of whom felt robbed when the result was announced. Some contenders openly rejected the result of the primary and vowed never to support Obaseki. The APC is yet to reunite the warring factions – can a house divided against itself stand?.

5. Traditional wars

Edo people are very traditional people and as such the opinions of their traditional rulers carry a lot of weight. In Oshiomhole’s few years as Governor of Edo state he has gone to war against a lot of traditional rulers in Edo state. Today’s election is an opportunity for the traditional rulers to regain control by making sure Obaseki does not triumph in Edo.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today’s election in Edo will likely be marred by violence as powerful egos compete for control but in the end, there shall be only one victor or perhaps, it will be an inconclusive election.
