Politicians, business-moguls, captains of industry, entertainers and even sports men and women have all voiced their admiration for The 48 Laws of Power. The book is rumored to be a favorite of one of Nigeria’s most influential Leaders: General Badamusi Babangida. Here are some Business lessons we learned from The 48 Laws of Power.

Law 2. Don’t trust your friends too much and discover how to use your enemies

Trust is a priceless quality. Naturally you believe it should only be shared with the people closest to you. However, the 48 Laws of Power instructs that you should not trust your friends too much, no matter how tempting it may be

Law 4. Say less than is necessary

Silence intimidates. Even the Holy Bible tells us to talk less. Proverbs 10: 19 – “Too much talk leads to Sin, be sensible and keep your mouth shut.” (The Holy Bible - New Living Translation). When you talk less you can avoid ruining your reputation and also avoid the mistake of revealing too much.

Law 7. Make other people do your work for you and then take all the credit

Moses is observed by his father in-law who sees Moses doing all the work and wearing himself out. His father in-law warns Moses in Exodus 18:18 - “You’re going to wear yourself out - and the people, too”. In observance of the 7th Law, his father in-law instructs him in Exodus 18:20 “let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you.” (The Holy Bible - New Living Translation).

Law 11. Learn to keep people dependent on you

It is a common opinion that you should always align yourself with a “godfather”. The 11th Law warns against this. If you make a mistake, the “godfather” will replace or try to replace you e.g. See in Edo State the lessons from the clash between current Governor, Godwin Obaseki and Adams Oshiomhole (who many see as Obaseki’s “godfather”).

Law 12. Use Selective Honesty and Generosity to Disarm Your Victim

Honesty is ideal for bringing down the guard of suspicious people. In life and business, you would find that people are naturally suspicious. When approached, or offered a new product or service, they think “what is the angle?”, “what are you trying to gain from me?”

Law 14. Pose as a friend, work as a spy

The world is a global village. Your business succeeds based on the quality of information it has. Information can make the difference between a billion dollars and poverty. In business you may need to find out some information about someone or something beyond what is readily available. A modern day example of the observance of this law is the alleged hacking of Amazon’s Billionaire CEO “Jeff Bezos” phone by Saudi Crown “Prince Mohammed bin Salman”.

Law 16. Use Absence to Increase Respect and Honor

See finish is not good
. Whether in life or in Business. Being too common makes you appear common. Hide your face. However, if taken to the extreme, the law can back fire. Take the example of Moses “When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 32:1. The Holy Bible - New Living Translation). Do not keep your services, yourself or your product too much out of circulation or you will soon be forgotten.

Law 20. Do NOT Commit to Anyone

Be of value to all around you, a friend to all your clients and customers but loyal to no particular client or customer base but your own business goals “no permanent friend and no permanent enemy”.
