The EFCC has announced that it has arrested Uzodinma Agbazue, a deputy detective superintendent in the agency, for collecting a N15m bribe from a lawmaker.

This is what happened, according to a statement from EFCC Spokesman Wilson Uwujaren:

A lawmaker (unnamed) who is under a fraud investigation, contacted Agbazue to compromise the investigation and offered him a N15m bribe. Agbazue collected the money, promising to do as instructed.

The game plan collapsed after the Investigating officer, who was ignorant of his scheme, refused to do his bidding.

When the investigation gathered increased momentum, the lawmaker became uncomfortable and demanded a refund from Agbazue.

Agbazue only returned N5 million claiming that the balance of N10 million had been given to someone “to kill the case from the top”.

The lawmaker also alleged that the operative collected N1 million at a different time as assistance for settlement of his wife’s medical bill.

EFCC said the suspect will be subjected to administrative action as precursor to possible prosecution at the end of the investigation.
