Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers has warned against any attempt by individual or group to subvert the mandate given to the state’s governor-elect, Mr Ayo Fayose, under whatever guise.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the chairman of the council, who is also the Onitaji of Itaji, Oba Adamo Babalola, said the rulers gave the warning at the end of an emergency meeting held in Ado-Ekit.
It noted that the people of the state gave Fayose the mandate during the June 21 governorship election, adding that "the peoples’ powers are sacrosanct and must be respected’’.
It warned that any move to scuttle Fayose’s mandate would be resisted by the people who voted for him.
The council also commiserated with the family of the former Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Mr Omolafe Aderiye, who was assassinated last Thursday by unknown gunmen, it added.
It stated that the council was not happy about the legal tussle between All Progressives Congress and Fayose which culminated in the closure of courts in the state by the Chief Judge, Justice Ayodeji Daramola.
"We condemn in its strongest terms these occurrences which lead to destruction of life and property. We believe that Ekiti State is greater than any individual or group of persons; people must steer clear of any act that can set Ekiti ablaze.
"We appeal to the gladiators to sheathe their swords and prevent further aggravation of the already bad situation,” the statement stated.
It urged the state judiciary to continue to dispense justice and prove to the world that it remained the only hope of the common man.
The statement commended security agents for curtailing the crisis and restoring peace to the state, and appealed to residents to eschew violence by ensuring speedy restoration of peace to the state.
