Metro Estate Agent Arraigned For Defrauding Home Seekers

The police in Abuja on Thursday arraigned a property agent, Nuhu Abubakar for swindling six accommodation seekers to the tune of N1.5 million. He was charged with breach of trust and cheating.

The prosecutor, Insp. Abdullahi Adamu, told the court that one of the victims, Favour Nwafor, reported the issue. He alleged that between the months of October and November, the accused collected N400,000 from Nwafor through dishonest means.

Abubakar is also said to have collected N250,000 from other accommodation seekers, Uloma Nwosu and N220,000 from Deborah Neji.

The accused also collected N214,000 from Mbagu Obinna, N220,000 from Patience Oseywe and N230,000 from Victor Ogbonna, Adamu added.

He noted that the accused promised to get accommodation for the six persons at No. 22 Lusaka Street, Wuse Zone 6, Abuja but failed to do so, contrary to the provisions of sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and the Magistrate, Ms Binta Dogonyaro, set bail at N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Dogonyaro ordered that the sureties must be public servants not below Grade Level 8 and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case to Jan. 27, 2014.
