A mother, her three children and a neighbour were killed in a fire that began in the early hours of the morning, around 1:15am in Shagari Estate, Musan-Okunola Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.
Neighbours were alerted by a cry of fire by one knwon simply as Aunty Philo by the neighbour. Before sympathisers could rush to the flat, the fire had reportedly spread to the entire building, in the process by which the roof collapsed on Aunty Philo, burning her beyond recognition.
By the time the firemen arrived to the scene, the damage had been done. Autopsy revealed that the family may have been suffocated by the smoke from the fire, preventing them from escaping the flat, and were consequently consumed by the fire.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by candle fire.
