Business FEC approves N42 billion contracts for rehabilitation of roads across Nigeria

Nigeria - The Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Wednesday approved N42 billion contracts for the rehabilitation of roads across different states of the federation.

The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, disclosed this after the FEC meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House in Abuja.

The minister said the rehabilitation of Ilorin-Omuaran-Kabba road in Kwara and Kogi states was awarded for N8.2billion.

He said council also approved the award of contract for the dualisation of Kano-Katsina road phase 1 in the sum of N14.07billion.

Also approved was contract for the rehabilitation of Tumu-Pindiga-Kashere road in Gombe State to Futuk-Yalo in Bauchi state and Bashar-Dengi road in Plateau State for N3.07 billion.

Onolememen said that council also approved contract for the rehabilitation of Ilorin-Jebba- Mokwa-Birnin-Gwari-Kaduna road section 1 in the sum of N14.58billion.

Also approved was the rehabilitation of Mubi- Maiha-Sorao-road and Mubi-Bukula in Adamawa State in the sum of N2.9billion.

The Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, said FEC also approved contract for the supply of 70,000 software developments and support for Permanent Voter Cards Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Readers.

He stressed the need to acquire 160,000 Smart Card Readers to authenticate the permanent voter cards at the polling units during the 2015 general election.

"This is to ensure free, fair and credible elections", Maku said.

The Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, disclosed that council approved a draft National Addressing Policy.

She said the policy would set out the framework for the development and implementation of the National Addressing Policy System in Nigeria.

According to Johnson, the policy would assist government to plan and implement public policies and services and fight against natural disasters and diseases, including emergency management

She said the policy would also reinforce national and international security in line with the United Nations Universal Postal Union's Doha Declaration.

The minister said the policy would enhance fundamental steps in connecting people to public and private services, human rights and setting the foundation on which critical national policies could be built.
