The federal government of Nigeria has summoned top officials of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, to a meeting on Thursday, to prevent the group from embarking on its planned nationwide strike, Punch reports.

PENGASSAN had announced plans to go on strike starting Thursday on Monday. The body vowed to cripple the nation's oil sector, which will cause a new round of fuel scarcity.

Punch says Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige and the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu will be present at the meeting. Representatives of organized labour unions, including PENGASSAN and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, are also expected to be prevent.

However, PENGASSAN spokesman, Emmanuel Ojugbana, said the body would go ahead with the strike action, as previous meetings with the government weren't fruitful.
