FG Set Out 6,500 midwives to 1,500 health facilities

The Federal Government has deployed 6,500 midwives to 1,500 health facilities to ensure the presence of skilled attendants during childbirth specifically in rural areas.

Ado Muhammad, the Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, said that the Society for Obstetrician and Gynecologist of Nigeria (SOGON) which had signed a Memorandum of Understanding will officially begin the mentoring and supervision of midwives and doctors involved in the Midwifery Service Scheme (MSS) and Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P). This is to improve the quality of care recieved by expecting mothers.

He added that the federal government would employ 12,000 midwives by 2015.

Also, Fred Achem, the President of SOGON said that that gaps in quality of care would be detected, root cause analysis made and appropriate solution proposed.
