The Federal Government has ordered checking of blocks and concrete sector of the economy so as to reduce the frequent collapsing of buildings in the economy. The order was given by thegovernment through the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment during a sensitisation workshop organised by Standard Organisations of Nigeria(SON).
Minister of the state, Dr Samuel Ortom, said the Government was worried over the fact that new buildings and buildings under construction often collapsed. He siad it was due to this that SON launched a campaign of Zero tolerance to substandard prioducts, and also put in place its Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP), saying all sandcrete block makers are expected to be certified under the MANCAP.
He added that all participants should listen to what is said by SON officials at the forum and he would direct the SON to commence complete implementation of the MANCAP after the workshop, saying that no operator would have any reason not to comply.
He was satisfied with the commitment and passion shown by Odumodu and urged stakeholders to support it. s
Dr. Joseph Odumodu, SON Director General, said the issue of buildings collapses is disturbing and results in loss of human and material resources and also a negative affects the local and international image of the nation, its agencies and government.
