The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that it will investigate allegations that over 200 farmers in Benue State may have died from exposure to chemical weapons used by Fulani mercenaries during the recent deadly invasion of some villages in the state by herdsmen.

The move by the commission is coming even as the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Paul Orhii, said that the substance that was suspected to have been used by the mercenaries would be subjected to laboratory analysis abroad.

This was corroborated by the Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, who told Sunday Independentin Abuja on Friday that appropriate authorities are investigating the allegation. He, however, did not mention the authorities concerned.
