The new Commissioner of Police in Kaduna state, Mr Umar Shehu, while addressing newsmen on his achievements one week after his assumption of office said five prison escapees from the Niger Republic has been nabbed in the state.

Shehu said the escapees were arrested based on intelligence information which showed that they had absconded from prison while serving jail term for armed robbery and theft in Niger Republic and fled to Kaduna.

He said that the prisoners had been terrorising residents of Barnawa and other parts of Kaduna before they were arrested by the Operation Yaki Patrol teams.

The commissioner also said that two stolen vehicles, a Volkswagen Transporter bus from Lagos and Toyota Prado Jeep from Port-Harcourt were recovered.

He said the bus was recovered based on a tip-off received from police operatives attached to Birnin-Gwari Division, but that the driver had abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

He said investigation into the matter had already begun.

Shehu said that the jeep was snatched at gunpoint in Port-Harcourt but was intercepted in Zaria by Operation Yaki.

He said that the bandits engaged the patrol team in a gun battle during which three of them were arrested while one sustained bullet wounds.
