As Kerry A. Dolan says, Africa’s richest are getting richer. And Dangote is the richest of them all. Aliko Dangote of Nigeria tops the Forbes list for the third time in a row, with a fortune of $20.8 billion, which is $8.8 billion more than what he had last year, making him also the biggest gainer in dollars.
Nine Africans have joined the Forbes’s list of richest people in Africa, a measurement estimated based on their rising stock prices, oil deals, high-profile M&As and several other reasons.
Tanzania has the highest number of newcomers to the richest Africans list, with three names from that country alone.
The wealthiest newcomer to the Forbes’ Africa’s 50 Richest is Issad Rebrab, a food tycoon born in Algeria. The Cevital-founder’s wealth is estimated at $3.2 billion.
Issad Rebrab is the first Algerian to make the Forbes list and is also the first billionaire from the country.
There were three newcomers from Tanzania, two from Nigeria and one each from Kenya, Morocco and South Africa.
Meanwhile, Femi Otedola, a Nigerian energy businessman, made his way to the list in 2009, but promptly fell off, and now, he’s back again! The singular reason for his return to the famed Forbes billionaires list is his meteoric 1100% share price increase of his company, Forte Oil (a p4etroleum distribution company). Femi Otedola’s company recently purchased a power plant, and speculators have tied this purchase to the impressive rise of his company’s stocks.
Otedola is also the owner of Zenon Petroleum, a leading energy products distributor in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, another Nigerian made the list too. His name is Tunde Folawiyo. He is the MD of the Yinka Folawiyo group, a conglomerate founded in 1957 by his father, the late Wahab Folawiyo. The group is into span shipping, construction, banking, agriculture, energy trading and power.
