Sports Former World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro sentenced to jail

Former captain of the Italian national team Fabio Cannavaro has been sentenced to 10 months in jail.

Cannavaro who lifted the 2006 World Cup trophy for Italy in Germany, was found guilty to have gone against the orders to stay off his property that was seized by authorities.

Last year, local authorities in Italy seized a property belonging to the former Napoli, Juventus and Real Madrid defender, which was estimated at almost €1m of goods.

Cannavaro and his wife, have been under investigation for tax evasion by the Italian authorities.

His wife and brother, Paolo were each given custodial sentences. They have all appealed against the ruling.

Cannavaro won the best player award in 2006, after playing a pivotal role helping Italy win the World Cup
