Alan Turing, a computer pioneer and codebreaker has just gotten a posthumous royal pardon, BBC reports.

In 1952, he was convicted for homosexuality and chemically castrated. As a result of the conviction, he lost his security clearance and had to stop working as a codebreaker, ceasing his role which was vital to the World War II Allies.

This pardon was granted under the Royal Prerogative of Mercy following a request by the Minister of Justice, Chris Grayling.
