Ghana's Minister of Trade and Industry, Haruna Iddrisu at the opening of the 7th ECOWAS Trade Fair at Ghana's Trade Fair Centre in Accra called on West African leaders to make more efforts to accelerate the process of regional integration.

Iddrisu said that West Africa, with a population of over 300 million, an emerging vibrant private sector, therefore having a common currency and a common market within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sub-region was imperative.

“The happenings within the EU must serve both as an impetus and a challenge to spur leaders within the West African sub-region to commit to improving inter and intra-African trade,’’ he said.

He also urged leaders in the sub-region to remove all administrative and related bottlenecks, both covert and overt, to promote free trade and free movement of goods and services.

Dr Gbenga Greg Obideyi, the Director of Trade at the ECOWAS Commission, said the commission had put place in programmes and strategies to ensure regional integration while addressing all bottlenecks hampering regional trade.
