Niger state governor, Babaginda Aliyu has announced a ban on the use of old boats in ferrying passengers across rivers in the state.

The ban which was announced today follows the boat mishap on Thursday, Oct. 3, which claimed 18 lives in Kokoli village of Agwarra Local Government Area.

"The action is intended to ensure that old and rickety boats do not continue to take valuable lives in the riverine communities”, the governor said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Danladi Ndayebo.

The governor also directed operators of such ferry boats to provide life jackets to all passengers.

Aliyu assured the people of the state that other measures would be taken to ensure safe water transportation in the state.

The governor also condoled with families of the deceased who died in the recent boating accidents.

Nice step in the right direction. More needs to be done tho'.
What about maintenance?

@Jue, I wasn't talking about old boats and woods. I was concerned about the whole water transportation system.
Maintenance of boats would be the replacement of old and worn out parts.
Overcrowding should be frowned upon since it is mostly the culprit in these recent accidents.
