Greek police are trying to discover the identity of a young blonde girl who was found living on a Roma settlement with a family she did not resemble.

According to CNN, the girl was discovered during a search of a home in a community of Roma, also known as gypsies, near the town of Larissa in central Greece.

Police first became suspicious because the girl, who is blonde with very pale skin and blue eyes, did not resemble the couple who claimed to be her parents.

The couple had registered different numbers of children with different regional family registries. The woman claimed to have given birth to six children within a 10-month period.

When the couple were then questioned, "they changed repeatedly their story about how they got the child".

BBC also reported that, DNA tests revealed the child, called Maria and aged about four, was not related to the couple she lived with.

The little girl is now being looked after by a charity. Her photo has been released to help find her family.

Police are appealing internationally as the girl looks like she might be from northern or eastern Europe. In the meantime, the little girl is being given counseling by a police psychologist, the news agency said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the European Hotline for Missing Children or contact The Smile of the Child.
