Committee to Protect Journalists, a media rights watchdog on Thursday slammed Kenyan police for summoning two journalists who produced a documentary it sees as being offensive.

The documentary depicts security forces bickering during a deadly shopping mall siege and then looting shops.

The Inspector-General of Police, David Kimaiyo Kimaiyo had summoned John-Allan Namu and Mohamed Ali of the KTN channel for questioning over allegations of incitement and ``provoking propaganda’’, saying “there is a limit’’ to free speech, a comment which has drawn condemnation from the group.

“Kenya's robust press should not be targeted simply for airing the truth,’’ said Tom Rhodes, the East Africa consultant for the committee.

“Instead, the Kenyan police should be investigating the real criminals at Westgate, not the messengers.’’

According to the film, infighting between the police and army allowed gunmen to regain the upper hand during the initial stages of the assault recently on a Nairobi shopping mall.

Namu and Ali said they received death threats this year after they aired a documentary alleging foul play in the death of former internal security minister George Saitoti who died in a plane crash last year. (dpa/NAN)
