The floor of the House of Representatives was thrown into a prolonged rowdy session as members of the two factions of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) engaged themselves in a shouting match.

Trouble started when Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, after reading his welcome address announced a communication from the PDP to members of the party only in the chambers.

He refused to name which ‘faction’ of the party the communication came from but betrayed the real authors of the letter when he read the text indicating that it was the “national working committee of the party led by Alhaji Abubakar Baraje” that wrote to seek a meeting with PDP members of the House.

This announcement broke pandemonium as angry members of the PDP loyal to Chief Bangama Tukur rose and shouted down the speaker. The New PDP, not to be outdone countered the Old PDP throwing the floor into a battleground.

During the commotion, the speaker was seen frantically explaining to members who besieged his seat area to confront him on the audacious move to recognise the Baraje group.

The melee lasted for more than 30 minutes before order was restored.

According to LEGISREPORTS, Tambuwal’s action confirms his suspected secret membership of the New PDP.

When tempers eventually cooled, the speaker announced that there was also a communication from the Tukur led PDP seeking a meeting with the PDP caucus of the House today for 3pm but that the letter was withdrawn which is why he saw no need to bring it up on the floor.

The House carried on with proceedings with a tension-soaked atmosphere and later a vote of confidence on the leadership of Tambuwal was moved and carried by the lawmakers.

The motion for the vote was moved by Hon. Kingsley Chinda (PDP) from Rivers State and seconded by Hon. Goni (Yobe, PDP).

The New PDP legislators are expected to meet soon.

When will these guys be allowed to start bringing in guns into sessions? A gun would be handy in this kinda situation.

That would solve little if not most of Nigeria's problems.

The Speaker is also covered by the freedom of association and freedom of movement as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, so please allow the Big Oga his legitimate rights. Afterall, he is a full-bloodied Nigerian and has a right to decide where to belong.

Well spoken. But you know it's difficult to go against a bigger opponent, to "fight the power".
