The Nigerian Communications Commission has suspended activities that would have culminated to the auctioning of the 2.6 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band ‘till further notice,' The Nation reports.

A statement from NCC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Eugene Juwah, says “The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, regrets to inform parties interested in participating in the Auction of Frequency Spectrum Licenses in the 2.6GHz band that it has decided to postpone the process of the Auction until further notice. The 2.6GHz indicative auction timetable is suspended. We regret any inconvenience caused by this suspension.”

The Commission had citing "administrative constraints" last November, postponed the plan to auction the spectrum band, initially slated for early December.

But two weeks ago, NCC announced that it had resumed the process that would have climaxed in the auction of the spectrum which, it said, would now take place during the week commencing May 4,

Sector analysts said the spectrum band is critical to the deployment of high-speed broadband internet services in the telecoms sector, where voice segment has grown significantly, while operators see data as the next frontier of revenue.
