Mohammed Abubakar, the Inspector General of Police, has issued a warning that Nigerians should avoid public places during this independence celebration due to suspicions of possible terrorist attack.

According to The Citizen, he said this while calling on his men to make sure Nigerian security is not compromised during the celebration. He asked Commandants to “pay special attention to Shopping Malls, Public Parks and Beaches, Highways and other critical infrastructures and sensitive areas in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of the citizenry.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has said that the celebration of Nigeria’s 53rd year since independence will be a low-key affair.

Special Assistant to the Secretary to the Federal Government, Sam Nwaobasi said this in Abuja yesterday when he said that due to the “many issues, including insecurity, the celebration this year like in the last two years would be low keyed.”
