Asia- An Indian army trooper killed five of his colleagues before shooting himself dead on Thursday inside a camp in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

According to the Indian Army spokesman in Srinagar, Lt Col N N Joshi, the killing took place at a camp at Safapoora village of Bandipora district, about 35 kilometres north of Srinagar city.

"Early today an army trooper ran amok inside the camp and fired indiscriminately killing five of his colleagues on the spot and later on shot himself dead.

"We are trying to get the details behind this incident and will share them soon,’’ Joshi said.

He said that a trooper was also believed to have been wounded in the melee.

However, Indian army has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir, the highest militarised region, are battling armed insurgency and are reportedly to be under a lot of stress and strain.
