Nigerians are huge fans of gadgets and technology, and the thirst for luxury products and anything that makes them stand out from the crowd is unquenchable.

Several years ago, it was the Blackberry craze. Back then, it was a common thing at social gatherings to see people press their phone every minute as they ping, sharing the latest gossip with their friends, text, chat, read emails, transact business, chat on their Facebook or Twitter pages, download music and, of course, snap loads of pictures, among other things.

However, a new craze is in town, and its name is The Apple iPhone. This device is reputed to be the world's most powerful personal device with impressive functions. Besides being expensive (this baby sells for N350,000), using an iPhone boosts the user's social status – a situation wherein if I have an iPhone 7 and you don’t, I stand head and shoulders above you- even if you look more well-fed or well-to-do than me.

Apart from the bragging rights and respect this device commands, here are so many other things it embodies:

Variants: The iPhone comes in two versions- iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Both variants are basically the same thing, except the second one is for people who want a larger, better screen. The iPhone 7 Plus comes with a 5.5-inch screen, which gives you more room to play HD video games like GTA or to watch crisp movies and TV series. The smaller version has a 4.7-inch screen, and neither of the two screens are easily scratched.

Body Build: At first glance, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus look exactly like their 2014 predecessors- the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but now they are water resistant. You can dip the phones in water for a significant amount of time without damaging it. Here’s a video of a 10-hour Water Freeze Test. The iPhone 7 was put in a container filled with water and refrigerated for about 10 hours. In the end, the phone remained intact- and was working okay.

This phone surely has a sturdy build.

No Headphone Jack: And the phone comes with a major surprise- it has no headphone jack. That little hole where you plug in your earpiece and enjoy soothing music is gone. Instead, Apple has introduced Earpods, which work via Bluetooth. This is refreshingly good, as it saves you the stress of untangling earphone wires.

Camera Quality: The iPhone 7 has a better rear camera than the iPhone 6, as well as most other flagship smartphones out there. The 12-megapixel camera has two lenses- an f/1.8 28mm wide-angle lens and another f/2.8 56mm telephoto lens, which operate simultaneously.

This means you can switch to a true 2x zoom by tapping on a button, which is very nice. You can also digitally zoom the 1x lens to 2x, where the telephoto takes over, and then digitally zoom the 2x lens to 10x. Digital zoom is still digital zoom; anything past 4x looks like what you’d expect from a grainy digital zoom. The device also has flash, so you can take pictures at night or in dark places.

The 7 megapixels front camera is great for selfies and Instagram. It’s bright, sharp, and has the Retina Flash feature, which was lifted from Snapchat.

Processor: You also get a beast of an engine from the iPhone 7 (or iPhone 7 Plus). The phone has a Quad-core 2.34 GHz processor, which, when coupled with 2GB RAM (on the iPhone7), or 3GB RAM (on the 7 Plus), ensures the phone operates seamlessly. You can multitask, open several apps simultaneously, and won’t experience lagging.

Media Storage: For storing your media files (pictures, songs, and videos) the iPhone 7 offers a minimum of 32 GB of space. Depending on the variant you get, this could increase to 128GB or 256GB as well; you’ll just have to fork out more money.

Operating System: The iPhone 7 runs on the unique operating system iOS 10.0.1, which you can upgrade to iOS 10.2 to enjoy the latest from Apple.

Battery Life: The iPhone7 comes with a 1960mAh battery, which will give you about 40 hours of playing music or 14 hours of heavy use on 3G. The 7 Plus has a 2900mAh battery, which will drain after 21 hours of 3G usage or 60 hours of playing music.

Colour options include: Jet Black, Black, Silver, Gold, Rose Gold
