The House of Representatives has today rejected President Jonathan’s suspension of the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

The House made this decision today after the motion on the matter was adopted. The motion was moved by minority whip, Samson Osagie.

In argument, Osagie said the suspension of Sanusi was “unconstitutional” and antithetical to the country’s economy especially since it came on the heels of the governor’s big concerns over missing funds.

Wrong Timing

Osagie said that the timing of the suspension was wrong and that Sanusi need not be suspended as he had only carried out his duties as CEO of the nation’s apex bank.

He empathized that the manner in which Sanusi was suspended reeked of unfairness as he hadn’t been initially queried, and that when Sanusi raised issues of the missing funds, the matter should have been thoroughly diagnosed.

The motion, however, received a lot of controversy as some other members of the house were against Osagie’s view on the matter.

Deputy House Leader, Leo Ogor, said the president was well within his constitutional authority to appoint and suspend any individual in any office. However, some of the lawmakers booed Ogor’s statement, and the house was thrown into confusion.

Speaker for the House, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal forestalled further debate by putting an end to the vote.

Still, a remarkably high number of the lawmakers were in favor of Osagie’s motion.
