A Japanese military jet with six airmen on board has disappeared from radar over southern Japan, news.com.au reports.

According to Japanese Defence Ministry, the military plane disappeared on Wednesday afternoon about an after takeoff from Kanoya base for what was supposed to be a three-hour flight.

After more than 300 troops joined the search effort without success, it was called off for the night and was set to resume on Thursday morning.

The ministry said the U-125 search-and-rescue jet lost contact while it was flying over mountains about 10km north of the Air Self-Defence Force's Kanoya base in Kagoshima.
