The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, on Friday swore in Justice Ibrahim Bukar as the new Chief Judge of the FCT High Court.

She charged Bukar to strive hard in the discharge of his duties in accordance with the oath of office he has subscribed to, urged him to have the fear of God in his heart and to also follow the dictate of his conscience in carrying out the functions of the office

She said that his appointment came at a time “when the Nigerian Judiciary, particularly the High Court of the FCT is on the heels of various challenges’’.

“I am of a firm belief that these challenges are not insurmountable.

“I, therefore, charge you to make all efforts and leave no stone unturned in repositioning the FCT judiciary and ensure that the confidence of the public is restored in the system,'' she said.

Speaking to newsmen after the ceremony, Bukar assured residents of the FCT that justice would be rendered to all litigants, according to law, rules and procedures.

Bukar was made the substantive Chief Judge of the FCT High Court on Oct. 4 after acting for about three months.

President Goodluck Jonathan had appointed him as the Chief Judge of the court, following a recommendation by the National Judicial Council under the Chairmanship of Mukhtar.

Justice Bukar succeeded Justice Mohammed Lawal Gummi, who retired voluntarily about three months ago to become the Emir of Gummi in Zamfara.

Bukar, born in 1950 is a Borno indigene and hails from Maiduguri LGA. He was called to Bar in 1981 and he served as a State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice from 1982 to 1984.

Bukar later joined the Borno Judiciary as a Magistrate in 1984 and was appointed as Secretary, Judicial Service Commission in 1989. He became the Director, Judicial Service Commission in 1990 and Director, Area Courts the same year.

He was elevated to the post of Chief Registrar, High Court of Justice, Borno in 1991 and appointed as a Judge in the FCT High Court in 1992. (NAN)
